The Two of Cups and Friendship

Posted on May 3, 2023April 26, 2023 by Rowan

Introduction

As Tarot readers, we often think of the Two of Cups as being mostly about romantic love. Indeed, I tend to think of The Lovers card as being more about choices and the Two of Cups being the one about love and romance. But really, this card can represent any sort of important partnership, be that romantic, sexual, or platonic. Today we’re going to take a look at the Two of Cups and friendship.

The Symbolism of the Two of Cups

The Two of Cups features two individuals, usually a man and a woman, holding a cup in one hand and reaching towards each other with the other. Between them, a winged lion’s head, symbolizing passion and courage, is often depicted on a caduceus, representing balance and harmony. This image, especially the one in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, is often interpreted as a marriage ceremony, but it certainly doesn’t have to be that. This imagery conveys a sense of mutual understanding, shared values, and emotional equilibrium.

In terms of friendship, the Two of Cups represents the following qualities:

  • Mutual respect and admiration
  • Emotional support and understanding
  • Shared interests and values
  • A balanced, harmonious connection

The Role of Friendship in Our Lives

Friendship is a fundamental aspect of our lives, providing us with companionship, emotional support, and a sense of belonging. The Two of Cups highlights the importance of nurturing these connections, reminding us that true friendship is built on a foundation of trust, empathy, and mutual respect.

As children, our first important relationships with other people are usually with our parents and other family members, but those are largely driven by those older family members. Friendships are the first meaningful relationships with other people that we cultivate on our own; they’re our way of reaching out into the world and finding our place in it.

For some people, getting married and/or having children for some reason seems to signal the end of friendships. Many people mostly stop seeking or having friends once they’ve found a marriage partner, or consider the friends they do have as just something to fill the time when their spouse is unavailable. Some even seem to feel that having friends is childish, that friends are just something young people do while “looking” for a spouse.

I’ve never understood this view, and have often been frustrated when trying to maintain a friendship with someone who has this approach to non-romantic relationships. The Two of Cups can help us to remember the value of interpersonal relationships of all kinds, including friendship.

Here are some ways the Two of Cups can inspire us to cultivate and cherish our friendships:

Be present and attentive: Listen actively to your friends, offering support and understanding without judgment or unsolicited advice.

Communicate openly and honestly: Share your thoughts, feelings, and experiences with your friends, fostering a sense of trust and emotional intimacy.

Celebrate your friends’ achievements: Show genuine interest in your friends’ lives and accomplishments, offering encouragement and praise.

Be reliable and consistent: Demonstrate your commitment to your friendships by being dependable and trustworthy, always keeping your promises and showing up for your friends when they need you.

The Two of Cups and Friendship in Tarot Readings

When the Two of Cups appears in a Tarot reading, it can signify an existing friendship or the potential for a new, meaningful connection. Consider the following interpretations:

Existing friendships: The Two of Cups may indicate that a current friendship is blossoming or deepening, encouraging you to nurture this connection and appreciate the joy it brings to your life.

New friendships: The appearance of the Two of Cups could suggest that a new friendship is on the horizon, opening the door to a harmonious and fulfilling connection.

Strengthening bonds: The Two of Cups can also serve as a reminder to invest time and energy into your existing friendships, fostering deeper connections and a greater sense of mutual support.

Conclusion

The Two of Cups, while often associated with romantic relationships, holds valuable lessons for our friendships as well. By embracing the qualities of mutual respect, emotional support, and shared values, we can cultivate meaningful connections that enrich our lives and bring us joy. Let the Two of Cups inspire you to cherish your friendships and celebrate the harmonious bonds that connect us all.
